My rating: 5/5
Scarlett has never left the tiny island where she and her beloved sister, Tella, live with their powerful, and cruel, father. Now Scarlett’s father has arranged a marriage for her, and Scarlett thinks her dreams of seeing Caraval, the far-away, once-a-year performance where the audience participates in the show, are over.
But this year, Scarlett’s long-dreamt of invitation finally arrives. With the help of a mysterious sailor, Tella whisks Scarlett away to the show. Only, as soon as they arrive, Tella is kidnapped by Caraval’s mastermind organizer, Legend. It turns out that this season’s Caraval revolves around Tella, and whoever finds her first is the winner.
Scarlett has been told that everything that happens during Caraval is only an elaborate performance. But she nevertheless becomes enmeshed in a game of love, heartbreak, and magic with the other players in the game. And whether Caraval is real or not, she must find Tella before the five nights of the game are over, a dangerous domino effect of consequences is set off, and her sister disappears forever.
Yest, another young adult book has surprised me! I’d consider Caraval as a unique psychological thriller in a way. The best I can do to describe this novel is that it is a combination of the following:
- Alice in Wonderland
- Beauty and the Beast
- The Illusionist
- Hunger Games
- Harry Potter
And that is not a bad thing at all! Garber still has her own style and twists infused that my mind couldn’t keep up with who was who and what was what! Messing with reality and time is a great approach to entice us as readers, I know I’m appreciative. This is the first installment in the series, and I am eagerly anticipating the next form Garber. Seeing how Scarlett grew in a few short days into a strong, independent woman was beautifully attained and lovely to witness. I wonder if the sequel will focus on another major character (no spoilers 🙂 ) based on the ending. A fast-paced, enjoyable read that will have you questioning what is real and what is part of the game…
What would you do if you were invited to play Legend’s game?
